De La Soul stond jarenlang lijnrecht tegenover de grote boze geldwolven van Tommy Boy. Ze vochten als leeuwen en hebben sinds kort eindelijk de rechten van hun eigen muziek terug. Een tijdje terug mochten we al de eerste officiële reissue van ‘3 Feet High And Rising’ aankondigen - waarvan de gekleurde pre-orders overigens bijna zijn uitverkocht.

Het was datzelfde Tommy Boy dat na het succes van het fleurige debuut ‘3 Feet High And Rising’ de groep probeerde te marketen als de hippies van de hip hop - een imago dat ze verachtten. Voor de opvolger gooiden ze alles over een andere boeg… Weg met de getekende madeliefjes en de felle kleuren. In plaats daarvan zie je een omgevallen plantenpot, met de bloemen op half zeven. ‘De La Soul Is Dead’, werd de gevatte en veelzeggende titel.

En hoewel de plaat in totaal minder verkocht, kreeg hij van de critici en de trouwste fans een nog dieper plekje in het hart. Zo kreeg hij van het legendarische hip hop magazine een five-mic rating en was daarmee de eerste ooit. Je kunt je voorstellen dat ook deze plaat node werd gemist tijdens de vete met het label. Daar komt nu verandering in… pre-order ‘De La Soul Is Dead’ nu!
