Op 11 november verschijnt Only The Strong Survive, het 21e studioalbum van Bruce Springsteen. Op het album staan vijftien soulcovers van artiesten als The Commodores, Diana Ross & The Supremes en The Temptations.
Met Only The Strong Survive wil Bruce Springsteen zijn liefde voor soulmuziek overbrengen aan het hedendaagse publiek. Het album is volgens de zanger een ode aan de talloze hits die labels als Motown en Stax en songwriters/producers als Gamble & Huff hebben voortgebracht.
Springsteen: “I wanted to make an album where I just sang. And what better music to work with than the great American songbook of the Sixties and Seventies? I’ve taken my inspiration from Levi Stubbs, David Ruffin, Jimmy Ruffin, the Iceman Jerry Butler, Diana Ross, Dobie Gray, and Scott Walker, among many others. I’ve tried to do justice to them all - and to the fabulous writers of this glorious music. My goal is for the modern audience to experience its beauty and joy, just as I have since I first heard it. I hope you love listening to it as much as I loved making it.”
Springsteen nam Only The Strong Survive op in New Jersey, samen met producer Ron Aniello, engineer Rob Lebret en executive producer Jon Landau. Aan het album werkten verschillende gastartiesten mee. Met Sam Moore nam Springsteen het duet Soul Days op, als backing vocals zijn Soozie Tyrell, Lisa Lowell, Michelle Moore, Curtis King Jr., Dennis Collins en Fonzi Thornton te horen. Ook The E Street Horns, de blazerssectie waarmee Springsteen eerder tourde, werkten mee aan het album. In een persoonlijke video op YouTube vertelt Springsteen meer over Only The Strong Survive.
